BIG IDEA:  Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas!

GET TALKING:

• Where were Mary & Joseph traveling to? (Bethlehem)
• They had a difficult time finding a place to stay.  Where did they end up sleeping? (In a stable, with animals.)
• That night their baby was born, what did they name him? (JESUS!)
• Who is Jesus? (God's Son.)

ACTION PLAN: Tell someone that Jesus is God's Son.

PRAYER: Thank God for sending Jesus to be born.

GET TALKING:

• What problem did they have when they got to Bethlehem? (There was no place to stay.)
• Where did they finally end up sleeping? (In a stable, with the animals.)
• That night, Jesus was born! But He didn't have a crib to lay in, where did He sleep? (In a manger, a box where animals eat.)

ACTION PLAN: Talk about ways you and your family celebrate Jesus' birth during Christmas.

PRAYER:  Thank God for Jesus!

BIG IDEA: We can celebrate because Jesus was born for you and me!

GET TALKING:

• Who were the first people to hear that God’s Son, Jesus was born? (The shepherds)
• Who told the shepherds about Jesus? (Angels)
• How did the shepherds respond when they heard the good news from the angel? (They hurried into town and found the baby in the manger.)
• What did they do after they saw Jesus? (They shared the good news with anyone who would listen!)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the town of David, was just one of the many events that fulfilled God’s promise to send the Messiah. This Messiah, as one of King David’s descendants, was called the Prince of Peace. Jesus came to give us peace with God - a peace made possible by Jesus’ death on the cross. As a result, we are invited to live forever with Him as part of His family!

ACTION PLAN: Tell why Jesus’ birth is best reason to celebrate Christmas.

BIG IDEA: God’s promise to send Jesus is for me.

• Who was Isaiah and what did God tell him? (A prophet; that a child will be born and will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace)
• What promise did God make to Mary? (To give her a son.)
• What did God promise about Jesus? (He is God’s Son. He is the promised Savior.)
• Why is God’s promise important? (Because through his promise of sending Jesus, God has arranged for us to be part of His family.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: The first chapter of Matthew announced that God’s promise to send Jesus was coming true! The Old Testament told this promise over and over again. This Christmas, celebrate the birth of the King, the Savior who made it possible for our sins to be forgiven.

ACTION PLAN: Describe Jesus and what God’s plan to send His Son means the world and to me.

• Why was King Saul trying to find David? (He was angry with David. He wanted to hurt him.)

• How did King Saul find out his stuff was missing? (David ran up to the top of a hill and yelled "Wake up!"  The King then noticed they were missing.)
• What did King Saul do next? (He said he was sorry.)
• How did David show God's love to King Saul? (He didn't hurt King Saul when he was sleeping.)

ACTION PLAN: Describe times when being kind can be difficult.

• Why was King Saul angry at David? (He thought David was trying to take his job as King.)
• Where was David and his friends hiding? And why? (In the hills with caves and rocks; King Saul was trying to kill him.)
• When David found King Saul sleeping, David could have hurt him, but what did he do? (He stole his spear and jug. Ran to the top of the hill and yelled at him, asking where his spear and jug were.)
• How did Saul act when he realized David was close enough to hurt him, but chose not to? (King Saul admitted he was wrong, said he wouldn't try to hurt him anymore.)

ACTION PLAN: Describe times when being kind to others can be difficult.

BIG IDEA: No matter what happens, I know that God protects me and helps me.

GET TALKING:

• How did God help and protect Joseph when he was in prison? (God was with Joseph and gave him success in everything he did. God helped Joseph interpret the dreams of the men in prison.)
• How did God help Joseph when he spoke to Pharaoh? (God gave Joseph courage to speak to Pharaoh and gave him the correct interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams.)
• When is a time that kids your age might need to ask God for help? (When they are sick. When afraid at night. During a big game.)
• Who has God given to you to help you and keep you safe? (Friends, family, teachers.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: God had a great plan to make all the bad things in Joseph’s life into something really good. Joseph’s life is a picture of how God saves us and gives us new life when we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior.

ACTION PLAN: Recognize ways God has helped me in the past, and ask for His help for the future.

Isaac, the Good Neighbor

BIG IDEA: Being a peacemaker helps others learn to love God.

GET TALKING:

• What did other people do that made it hard for Isaac to live at peace with them? (They demanded that the water in Isaac’s wells was theirs.)
• Why were they unkind to Isaac? (They were jealous of him.)
• What was the result of Isaac’s actions? (The Philistines recognized that God was with Isaac, and they stopped trying to fight with him.)
• When can you show God’s love by being a peacemaker?
• What are some things that you can say or do when you feel like arguing or when someone starts an argument with you (Count to 10. Walk away. Pray. Ask an adult for help.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: Isaac chose to make eace, but Jesus is the ultimate peacemaker; He made peace with God on our behalf. Because Jesus died on the cross and then came back to life again, God promises that when we trust in Jesus, He will forgive our sins and make us part of His family. The only right response to this amazing gift is a grateful life of pursuing peace and showing God’s love to others.

ACTION PLAN: Plan ways to make peace when I’m having a hard time getting along with others.

BIG IDEA: Living for God means that I am generous and not selfish or greedy.

GET TALKING:

• What were the results of Jacob’s actions? (Esau became angry with his brother, Jacob, and the family was split and upset with one another.)
• How could Jacob and Esau have been generous with each other instead of caring only for themselves? (Jacob could have made a stew for his brother out of kindness, instead of demanding the birthright in exchange. Esau could have cared more about his birthright than his hunger.)
• Looking out for other’s interests means more than just caring about what someone else cares about. It’s also about being generous instead of selfishly keeping things for yourself. What’s an example of how a kid is selfish? (Won’t share with others. Doesn’t think about how others feel.) Not selfish? (Offers to help others. Shares. Thinks about others. Looks for ways to help.)
• How might someone be generous? 

CONNECTING TO JESUS: The story of Jacob is full of surprises! Jacob lied to his father to receive the blessing that belonged to Esau. Jacob didn’t deserve it, but God still loved him. Hundreds of years later, Jesus was born to one of Jacob’s descendants. God’s surprise for us is that even though we don’t deserve His love, God still loves us! Jesus made it possible!

ACTION PLAN: Tell examples of ways to care for the needs of others because of God’s great love for me.

ACTION PLAN: Name different ways you can listen & obey at home.

PRAYER:  Ask God to help you to obey Him.

Eliezer’s Prayer Time

Genesis 24

BIG IDEA: When I pray to God, He will give me wisdom! 

GET TALKING: 

• What did Abraham tell Eliezer to do? (To travel to where Abraham’s relatives lived to find a wife who believed in God for Isaac, his son.) 
• How did God answer Eliezer’s prayer? (He sent a young girl, Rebekah, to where Eliezer was. Eliezer had prayed that God’s chosen bride for Isaac would offer both he and his camels water, and Rebekah did just that.) 
• Any time of day, we can talk to God about what’s happening in our lives. He will always give us wisdom and help us know what to do. What are some examples of ways a kid your age can act wisely? (Do homework before other things after school. Do what is right, even when friends want to do something wrong.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: Genesis 24 tells the next part of the story in God’s plan to send a Savior through Abraham’s family. What if Abraham had settled for an idol-worshipping wife from Canaan for Isaac? What if Eliezer hadn’t prayed and asked God for wisdom? They would have missed out on their part in the story of how God kept His promise to send Jesus. We, too, can ask God for wisdom and know that He will give it to us generously. 

ACTION PLAN: Describe ways God answers my prayers for wisdom, and pray about situations in my life.

• How did Samuel help Eli get the Tabernacle ready? (Polish candlesticks, fill water bowls, carry firewood, swept floors)
• When the Tabernacle was ready, what did Samuel get to do? (Open the doors to let people in.)
• What did people do in the Tabernacle? (Worshiped God, sang songs, prayed, told God they loved Him.)

ACTION PLAN: Find some ways that you can help someone this week.

PRAYER:  Ask God to help us help others.

A Promise Fulfilled

Genesis 17:1 - 18:19; 21: 1-7

BIG IDEA: Because God keeps His promises, I can trust Him always! 

GET TALKING: 

• What did God promise Abraham? (That he would be the father of many nations. That God would give Abraham and his descendants the entire land of Canaan.)
• Why do you think Abraham chose to keep believing in God’s promises to him?
• When might a student your age need to trust God? (When walking home from school. When going to sleep at night. When taking a big test.) When we hold on to God and His promises, we believe in Him all the time.

CONNECTING TO JESUS: God promised Abraham that all the people born in his family would be more than anyone could count - like stars in the sky and sand on the seashore! Through Isaac, Abraham’s son, the promises of God would be passed down to a whole nation. Out of that nation came the one man through whom all people can be saved. Abraham didn’t see God’s promises completely fulfilled - he wasn’t alive when Jesus was born. But he believed that God would keep His promises. Through Jesus, we can receive God’s promises, too! 

ACTION PLAN: Discuss times I need to hold on to and remember God’s promises.

• When Samuel was older, he lived at the Tabernacle.  What did his mom bring him each year? (A new coat.)

ACTION PLAN: Name a time when you can talk to God.

PRAYER: Thank God for loving you, and tell Him you love Him, too.

God loves us so much, though, that He made a way to forgive us and make us part of His family - not by anything that we do, but by Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Many years later, God sent Jesus - His very own Son - to save everyone who believes in Him.

BIG IDEA:  It is wise to ask God for wisdom in every situation.

• What could Solomon have asked God to give him? (Lots of money. Strength. Long life. Famous.)
• What did Solomon ask for? (Wisdom.)
• In those days, Kings were like judges and helped people's problems.  What was one of the problems brought to King Solomon?  (Two ladies were fighting over a baby, claiming it was theirs.)
• How did Solomon show God's wisdom to find out who the true mother was? (He said they would cut the baby in half, so each mother would have the baby. He knew the true mother would never let harm come her baby, and would give it up.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  The book of James says that there is wisdom that comes down from heaven.  It is pure and peace-loving.  It is merciful and humble.  That sounds like Jesus! Jesus lived a pure life so He could make peace for us with God.  He was so humble that He was willing to die on a cross for us.  He showed us mercy, which is more love or kindness than we deserve.  We don't deserve His mercy and wisdom.  But He is so kind that He gives them to us when we ask Him and trust Him!  And that goes for kids and adults!  We don't have to be a certain age for God's wisdom, He will give it to anyone who asks and trusts!

ACTION PLAN:  Identify everyday situations in which we need God's wisdom.

2 Samuel 11:1--12:14

BIG IDEA:   It is wise to talk to God when I have done wrong things.

GET TALKING: 

• King David made some poor choices, what did he do after he had sinned? (Tried covering it up.)
• God sent the prophet Nathan to talk to David, what was his story about? (A rich man, with many sheep, took the poor man's only lamb to feed his guests.)
• What was David's response to the story? (David was angry, and said the rich man deserved to die!)
• After Nathan told him the story was about him, what happened next? (He realized he had sinned and was sorry. Nathan told him God forgave him.)
• What did David learn about God? (That God knows everything we do. God is merciful and forgiving.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  God knows everything we do and say, so there's no need to cover up our sins.  He knows all the good and the bad.  But if we confess and turn away from our sin, God forgives us.  He can also turn sad things in our lives into great things! David had been selfish and done terrible things, but he confessed his sin -- and God forgave him.  The first baby David and Bathsheba had together died.  That was sad.  But they had another son -- Solomon.  God used Solomon to write some of the Bible, and he was also a part of Jesus's human family line!

ACTION PLAN:  Discuss ways to make things right when you have done wrong.

• What was the message? (For Barak to take an army of men to Mt. Tabor.  God would bring the enemy and its 900 chariots to the valley.  God would help Barak defeat the enemy army.)
• As Barak and his men started down the mountain, how did God help them? (He sent a bunch of rain (5:4).  The Kishon River flooded and most likely washed them away, leaving chariots stuck in the mud.  The army fled on foot. (5:20-21))

ACTION PLAN:  Talk about ways that you can obey God's Word.

• What promises has God made to us? (To love us.  To forgive us.  To make us part of His family when we believe in Jesus.  To answer our prayers.  To help us.  To provide our needs.  To give us wisdom if we ask Him and then trust Him.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  David promised to take care of Jonathan's family, no matter what.  Even years after Jonathan died, David kept his promise.  He brought Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth, to the palace to live like David's own family.  God made a promise, too.  After Adam and Eve sinned, He promised to make things right again.  He kept that promise when Jesus died and rose again to make us right with God.  Now God invites us to His table and into His family because Jesus made the way for God's promise to come true!

ACTION PLAN:  Talk about reasons to keep our promises.

• What did David do that was unwise? (Didn't obey God's rules, and carried the Ark the wrong way.)
• What did he do later that was wise? (Obeyed God and had the Ark carried the right way.  Led the people in praising God and cared only what God thought.)
• Who was Michal, and what was she upset about? (Michal was David's wife, and Saul's daughter. She was upset with how he was dressed and how he was behaving out in the streets, dancing like a regular person, not a King.) 
• Was David concerned with what other people thought? (No, he was only worried about pleasing and praising God!)
• What are some ways we can celebrate what God has done for us? (Examples: Sing a thankful song. Draw a picture. Write a poem. Tell others what He has done.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  The Ark of the Covenant reminded God's people that God was with them. David trusted God and wanted to honor Him.  That's why David brought the Ark to Jerusalem and held a giant celebration.  Many years later, Jesus came to Jerusalem in the middle of another giant celebration.  But Jesus came to do more than remind people that God is with them.  Jesus IS God and He came to show everyone how much God loves all of us!

ACTION PLAN:  List things God has done for you and celebrate them!

1 Samuel 25

BIG IDEA:  It is wise to stop and ask for God's wisdom when I feel angry.

GET TALKING: 

• Who was Nabal? (He was a rich man. David and his men helped to protect Nabal's shepherds and sheep, while they were out in the hills.)
• What was Nabal's response when David's servants asked for food and water? (Acted like he didn't know who David was. Didn't share any of his food or water.)
• What did Abigail, Nabal's wife, do when she heard what her husband had done? (She knew upsetting David wasn't a good idea! She prepared a lot of food and drink (including bread, meat, raisins & fig cakes, etc.) and took it to David and his men.)
• What was David's response? (He thanked God for her wise choice before anyone got hurt. He promised not to kill Nabal or anyone from his household.)
• What are some ways to calm down when you feel angry? (Examples: Ask God to help you calm down, and figure out why you are angry. Find a quiet place. Go for a walk. Snuggle a pet or stuffed animal.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  Sometimes we get angry.  Jesus got angry, too -- like when He saw people treating others unfairly, or not showing love to one another.  Jesus told them they were wrong, but He still LOVED them and never hurt them.  It can be difficult to show others love when they make us angry, but Jesus understands how we feel, and He can help us to still treat others with love and respect during those situations.  He can also help us to forgive, just as He forgives us! 

ACTION PLAN:  Plan what to do the next time you feel angry, and choose to obey God's Word.

• What did Saul discover about David when David showed him the piece of his robe? (That David was close enough to hurt him, but didn't. David showed him honor.)
• What does it look like to show honor to someone? (Examples: Look at the person who is talking. Say "please" and "thank you". Let that person go first or have first choice. Do what the person asks. Say kind words. Listen to the person.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS:  King Saul hated David, and his extreme jealousy caused David to run and hide.  But David didn't hate Saul back, or try to hurt him in return, David showed King Saul love.  Jesus also chose to love those that hated him and hurt him.  In fact, Jesus died on the cross to make a way for ALL people, even those that hated him, to be forgiven and become part of God's family.

ACTION PLAN:  Identify times it may be difficult to show honor to someone who doesn't deserve it, and ask for God's help.

GET TALKING: 

• How did Samson disobey God? (Told Delilah the secret about his hair, and let his hair be cut.)
• Even though Samson made wrong choices, how did God use him to destroy the Philistine leaders? (God gave him strength one last time to push the pillars over in the temple. The whole building fell down, killing the Philistine leaders, and Samson.)
• Our memory verse this month is 1 John 1:9. What does it say God will do if we confess our sins? (God will forgive us. Make us clean (purify us) from our wrong choices.)

CONNECTING TO JESUS: Samson made a lot of wrong choices, but God never changed His plan for Samson.  He planned for Samson to conquer the Philistines.  And in the end, that's EXACTLY what Samson did!  Since before Adam and Eve chose to disobey, God has had a plan.  No matter what bad things people did, God's plan always remained the same: for Jesus to come to Earth and die for our sins so that one day we could be with Him forever. It's because of Jesus that we can have forgiveness of sins and when we make mistakes, God never stops loving us and can still use us to fulfill His plan for our lives!

ACTION PLAN: Plan ways to tell others about God's forgiveness.
